Peter & Neal

We had Peter and Neale up last week to fish with us. To be perfectly honest, the weather was against us from the start.

We caught stuff all, the northerly blew all week and there was stuff all fish to be found anywhere (that we fish anyway).  But anyway, it turned out to be a ripper of  a week, Neale and Pete came up with aspirations of landing big GT’s but after going to all of the GT spots I know over here, we decided to get back into the fishing that I know really well,,,, the flats.

We were getting a little desperate to get some fish on board by now so were happy to get stuck into some nice big Goldens and Queenies in the shallows. We headed for a spot that I’ve been studying for a while. Within 5-10 minutes of drifting with the wind, we had started to spot some decent fish, a couple of big Golden Trevally that we spooked  and so missed the cast. But this did serve to get us all more alert. Peter was the first to spot a BIG GT. We got a couple of casts at it but no hook up.  This is where things started to happen pretty quickly for us, Peter was the first to hook up on an absolute cracker GT in 700cm of water. It was all go with the 25kg fish naturally heading for the nearest structure 20m away (mangroves), me trying my best to get the boat around trees to chase the line and Peter eventually jumping off the boat to get around the snags. He managed to get un-snagged and back in the boat but by this time the fish was about 100m away
