A Family Visit

Steve Buxton is a client from a couple of years ago who decided to bring his family back here for a holiday this year.

We had an absolute ball with them all. 4 kids aged from 4-13 years old plus mum and dad.  Two of the kids were mad keen fishermen and caught some decent fish. Young Zander (8 years old) caught 14 fish in 17 casts one day, all Mangrove Jack and some at 1 ½ kg. Nice effort.  He fed the whole camp that night but the poor little fella was so tired that he went to bed early and missed out on fish for dinner.

The highlight would have to be the day we really put some effort in. We left the little ones behind to play on the beach and relax around the camp and off we went to try to catch young Ned and his Dad some trophy fish.

An offshore shoal in the Exmouth Gulf was our first and only destination for the day. We started off casting at some schools of Tuna but with no success. We saw some tide lines and decided to explore along them as the tide was approaching high and that’s when we started spotting heaps of Manta Rays. They were quite happy to come right up to the boat and play around us, obviously curious and wanting to check us out. All of them except onehad multiple Cobia trailing them and one of these would have been around about 5 feet long.

Unfortunately they would not take anything we threw at them well that’s fishing. At one stage though we happened to be right where a bust up started right next to the boat and all around us. All of us were all hooked up, Ned on a beautiful 8kg Long tail Tuna, Steve on a whopper Spanish Mackerel and me on a decent Longtail as well. Unfortunately, Steve’s fish did a big head shake when were trying to bring it on board and smashed the lure up, I guess that’s what you get when you cast 60g poppers at big fish like that. (18-20kg), sometimes the light gear doesn’t hold up.  My Tuna got off too but one was enough anyway and Ned was very happy. His biggest fish ever! The rest of the day went pretty much the same, a lot more fish landed and a few more mistakes as well, but damn good fun.

Thanks for coming back again Steve, see you next time
